Mammut - from the "ropemaker" to a full-range supplier for alpine challenges
The Mammut brand can look back on a tradition dating back to 1862. After completing his apprenticeship, Kaspar Tanner opened a small ropery in the village of Dintikon in the Swiss canton of Aargau. In 1911 his son Oscar patented his rope-braiding machine, which was unique at the that time. Eight years later, the factory that had been built in the meantime became a public limited company and in the following century, the internationally successful Mammut Sports Group developed from it. one of the most important manufacturers of products for climbing, alpine, snow and outdoor sports.
The logo with the primeval proboscidean, first used in 1943, enjoys worldwide recognition and sets the company apart from its competitors. It symbolises strength and stands for the robustness of the products sold. In the 1950s and 1960s, the company introduced innovative products to the market. These include
- the first glacier rope Argenta made of nylon,
- a climbing rope constructed with a core sheath, the revolutionary Mammut Everest, and
- the first dynamic single rope awarded by the "International Federation for Mountaineering and Climbing
Through acquisitions, the brand expands its product range in the decades after the Second World War to include sleeping bags, tents, outdoor shoes, jackets and other clothing. Textile experts from Switzerland designed modern alpine trousers made of synthetic materials and other novelties. Since 1992, the company's central headquarters have been located in Seon. Today, well-known companies such as the Norwegian sleeping bag specialist Ajungilak and the Fürst AG with its expertise in backpacks are part of the group. In its extensive portfolio for women, men and children, the company combines safety and functionality with an attractive design.
