Traditional Sarner knit:

“Sarner“ knit, as its called in the Alps, is an authentic Alpine style of knitting. Over hundreds of years, its tradition has been preserved in all of the valleys where Sarner still protects people from cold and frost. Its first mention dates back to 1500. The quality of the wool that has been used since the beginning comes from native mountain sheep that live closely together with people in the Alpine region.

The distinctive function stems from the purl stitch pattern, its loops on both sides, as well as the unique tension of the knit that achieves its characteristic density. (Sarner must be knit with a much finer needle with the yarn put under tension.) That makes this knit wind resistant, warm due to the double loops, and water resistant thanks to wool’s naturally higher lanolin content. In addition, this style of knitting is especially durable and long lasting – all characteristics that help explain why this style of clothing became so widely popular in the Alpine regions.
