ABS stands for Avalanche Balloon System and is the pioneer of all avalanche airbag systems. After a Bavarian forestry master discovered in the 1970s that he remained on top in an avalanche with a killed deer on his shoulders because of the volume expansion, the idea of the avalanche airbag was born. Today, the avalanche airbag for freeriders, ski tourers and mountain guides is a reliable companion and almost a must-have when it comes to off-piste skiing to find untracked powder. Due to the volume expansion of the body, the ABS backpacks are the insurance for a slab or avalanche, which should prevent a complete spill. An ABS avalanche airbag thus increases the chance of survival and is therefore almost indispensable in the freeride scene.
