Yeti

Yeti

For more than 30 years the company name “Yeti” has been standing for high quality down sleeping bags and down jackets handmade in Germany. Founded 1983 in the German Democratic Republic, Yeti sleeping bags already then were used during extreme expeditions in Kazakhstan or Kyrgyzstan. After the German reunification in 1990 Yeti quickly established itself as one of the leading companies for down sleeping bags and down clothing. Yeti manufactures its down products in a small workshop in Goerlitz in the east of Germany. There eight employees hand-craft about 10,000 down sleeping bags every year.

Yeti - down sleeping bags from Germany

Yeti has its origins in eastern Germany near Berlin. In the early 1980ies, the founding family Exner were searching for a high quality sleeping bag. Because nothing they found could meet their demands, they manufactured their first sleeping bag from local down. They were quickly able to improve the quality of their sleeping bags and soon Yeti sleeping bags were used during many extreme expeditions in the former Eastern Bloc. Despite the ban of private firms in the GDR Yeti managed to be tolerated as a private company from 1987 onwards. This was mainly due to the high quality of their manufactured products, which no other company in the former Eastern Bloc was able to produce.
After the fall of the Berlin Wall 1989 and the opening of the borders for GDR citizens Yeti for the first time was able to import high-quality raw materials from abroad and soon became one of the leading providers of down products in the outdoor market. 2003 Yeti moved to its current location in Goerlitz, Saxony. There in a former textile factory located on the bank of the Neisse river the company produces high quality down sleeping bags and down clothing. In doing so Yeti puts much emphasis on hand-crafting and the experience of long-serving employees. And the high quality of their products prove it.

Crystal Down - The secret of the Yeti sleeping bag

Natural goose down insulate better than anything humans have ever developed. With its filament structure they interlink and form countless small air chambers that create an insulation layer. The quality of down - or in other words their fluffiness - can be measured in the unit "Loft". It describes the ability to withstand low pressure, but to give in to high amounts of pressure. The higher the loft value, the higher the quality. The Yeti goose down achieve the highest possible Loft values of up to 900 cubic inches. This highest quality down was named "Crystal Down" by Yeti. TodayYeti works exclusively with Crystal Down.

Yeti - Handmade in Germany

A Yeti sleeping bag distinguishes itself not only by the high-quality filling, also the materials used and Yeti’s workmanship leave nothing to be desired. Yeti selects only the highest quality materials for the exterior and interior of the sleeping bags and down jackets and all Yeti products are handcrafted in their workshop in Goerlitz.

The “next-to-nothing technology” by Yeti

For its ultra-light products Yeti uses its so-called "Next-to-Nothing" materials. This means the company always uses the lightest and most exclusive materials currently available. Their down proof Next-to-Nothing-ripstop nylon for example weighs only 25 grams per square meter while still being tear-proof, water- and wind-resistant and breathable. By using such materials it is possible for Yeti to reach for extreme lightness. The Yeti Passion-One sleeping bag for example weighs only 320 g, the ultra-light down jacket Strato for men from the Companyon series by Yeti weighs only 165 g - both being among the lightest products available worldwide.
