"The North Face" - a small climbers shop in San Francisco

In 1966 Douglas Tompkins opened a small retail shop for mountaineering and outdoor equipment in San Francisco. When searching for a name for his shop Tompkins was inspired by mountaineering. As the north face of a mountain in the northern hemisphere is generally the most difficult route to the top he named his shop simply “The North Face”. Two years later Tompkins began producing outdoor clothing and equipment under the same name. The first breakthrough for The North Face came in 1969 with the "Ruth bag". Due to its light weight, it revolutionized the backpack market. In 1975, the company introduced the "Oval Intention", the first geodesic dome tent. The successors of this tent are still very popular in many base camps around the world. In 1977 The North Face for the first time used the then revolutionary GORE-TEX material for outdoor clothing. In 1985 the company introduced the "Mountain Jacket" and "Mountain pants", the first waterproof ski suit made from GORE-TEX material. Today The North Face is a major player in the outdoor business and is primarily known for its high-quality functional clothing, innovative tents and backpacks.

The North Face - an expert for high-quality functional clothing

The North Face has always worked closely together with extreme sport athletes and expeditions. This co-operation has always been a main source of inspiration for new materials and new products. This makes it possible for The North Face to always be at the forefront of the latest technological developments in outdoor clothing - whether hard shell clothing, soft shell jackets and trousers, trekking trousers, fleece jackets or ski wear. Apart from functional garments The North Face also an extensive range of outdoor lifestyle fashion on offer.

Backpacks and tents from The North Face

With its tents and backpack line The North Face has created classics in the outdoor world. The North Face backpacks are available for all kinds of outdoor and mountain sports, ranging from day packs to highly technical climbers backpacks for extreme activities. The North Face tents have become classics in many alpine expeditions.

Hiking shoes, and approach shoes from The North Face

Another main focus of the company are hiking shoes for many different purposes. From lightweight approach shoes for walking to a climbing spot to a rugged all-purpose hiking shoe or even comfortable winter boots for everyday wear, The North Face has all of this on offer. Even mountaineers who are looking for highly specialized boots for extreme conditions in high alpine terrain will find what they are looking for at The North Face.
