Hanwag

Hanwag

Hanwag stands for innovation from tradition. Since 1921, the company has been combining the highest product quality with continuous innovation at the company headquarter in Munich, producing and manufacturing shoes with the highest functionality and the best quality for outdoor enthusiasts of all types. Whether it is hiking shoes, winter boots, mountain boots or trekking boots, the perfect fit is Hanwag’s most important criterion for every shoe. In addition to a proper fit, Hanwag and their shoes above all stand for longevity, durability and the use of only the best materials – and all that “Made in Europe” or for some Hanwag models even exclusively “Made in Germany”! By combining traditional craftsmanship with more than 90 years of experience and tradition, advanced technical know-how and continuous innovation, the Hanwag shoes with their well-known long durability are created. In addition, all shoes can be resoled and renewed easily with their special tweaked style, saving resources, the environment and your money.

Hanwag: The shoe brand for alpine adventures

The name of the Hanwag brand was simple: the company's founder was Hans Wagner. He used the first two syllables of his name in 1921. As shoemaker master from a shoemaker family in Upper Bavaria, he saw his specialty in the manufacture of solid mountain boots. His brothers also founded shoe companies, Lowa and Hochland. Solid craftsmanship was a tradition in the shoemaker family. If you look at Hanwag's shoes today, you can still see what the brand stands for: outstanding workmanship with a traditional but contemporary design.

Hanwag hiking boots: More quality is hardly possible

In addition to mountaineering boots and functional footwear, the core of the company's portfolio today includes outdoor boots and functional footwear. The focus is on first-class materials that provide the basis for excellent workmanship, durability and longevity. Those who are on the move in alpine mountain regions must be able to rely on the wearing comfort of their Hanwag hiking boots. Hanwag shoes are characterised by a number of properties that buyers will hardly find anywhere else. Some examples are

  • special lasts for different foot shapes
  • Trekking shoes in different widths
  • Shoes for straight toes or normally rounded foot shapes
  • special Hallux Valgus shoes
  • Custom-made mountain boots for special demands
  • double-sewn shoes according to old tradition
  • the use of robust yak leather.

In 1921, Hans Wagner first specialised in made-to-measure shoes. Since he had learned how to make double-sewn footwear, the production of oat shoes was obvious. Already in the 1920s the first mountain boots and ski boots were integrated into the assortment. Until 1940 these had to be sewn by hand. Afterwards, the production plant could be converted to machines. Demand increased. Since 1970 Hanwag has been developing functional alpine touring ski boots, climbing shoes and special shoes for paraglider pilots. The development of a non-slip tongue in 1992 goes back to Hanwag.

What is still guaranteed with Hanwag shoes today is the special design of the mountaineering boots. The double-stitched oat shoes were the first precursors of the production technology used to this day. Originally only solid working shoes were made by alpine forest workers in this way. Hans Wagner realized that the shoes were similarly strained by mountain hikers and climbers. In addition, he used twisted seams to feed shoes with multiple soles and to keep the shoe body in shape for a long time. Hanwag represents values that hardly any company in the shoe industry nowadays pays any attention to. But technically sophisticated manufacturing techniques have never stopped Hans Wagner from pursuing his own values and implementing them.

The right Hanwag hiking shoe for every hiker

Many manufacturers only use shoe sizes as a benchmark that defines the fit. Instead of focusing solely on shoe sizes as a criterion, Hanwag works with different lasts. These influence the basic shape of a shoe. The last should fit for as many foot shapes as possible: for wide or narrow forefeet, narrow or wider heels. In addition, almost all humans have two feet of different lengths. The company pays attention to detail in its interior design. Padded flaps without pressure points under the lacing are just as important as seamless heel areas or non-slip soles. The quality of hiking and mountaineering boots determines whether or not someone gets blisters after 5 kilometres. In well-managed Hanwag shoes nobody will experience such a thing.

The types of leather used by Hanwag are characterised by their special properties. Only skins from free-range cattle are used, as they are significantly more fibre-rich and hard-wearing. Hanwag has also acquired a unique selling point in this respect. The nubuck leather comes from native cattle. Yak leather is also used because of its enormous strength. The most durable Hanwag mountaineering boots are made of the best leathers. Contrary to the general trend that shoes must last one season at best, Hanwag mountaineering boots are designed for a long service life. However, it goes without saying that the lifespan of trekking and hiking boots can be defined and, if necessary, shortened by the duration and hardness of an enterprise.

Environmental standards and sustainability efforts at Hanwag

Even under new management, the Hanwag brand embodies everything it has always stood for: absolute reliability, solid workmanship, excellent fit and high wearing comfort. From the beginning until today, high quality of materials and workmanship was one of the basic conditions for the company. But where does Hanwag make his mountaineering boots? Even today, all alpine boots as well as the technically sophisticated shoes are still manufactured at the German site in Vierkirchen. In addition, the company has its own production facilities in Hungary, Croatia and Romania, which means that the company retains control over working conditions and prescribed production standards. The idea of sustainability was already reflected in the company's goals when all others had not yet thought about it. Since 1921, Hanwag's high-quality and durable mountain and hiking boots have ensured that the mountains of rubbish do not grow unnecessarily.

Many other hiking boots cannot be resoled with worn soles. With Hanwag, on the other hand, the twisted or double-sewn design ensures that the soles can be renewed several times. Hanwags mountaineering and trekking boots combine the ideal protection of resources, environmental awareness and longevity in a harmonious concept. The high quality materials do the rest to keep the quality standard high. The CO2-neutral "Terracare Zero"leather on some Hanwag models is the best proof that the company takes the ecological footprint very seriously. Manufacturing footwear in Asia continues to be inconceivable for Hanwag shoes.
